Under GST enrolment schedule released by government of India, all states across India have been alloted specific dates for conversion to GST. As part of the schedule, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has been alloted 16/12/2016 to 31/12/2016 slot.
As per the latest conversion % issued on GST portal, not even a single assessee registered in J&K has converted to GST. The reason being state government has not participated in this grand transition to GST plan.
Currently, J&K is outside the purview of Service Tax. J&K is the only state in the country with powers to tax services and it want to be part of GST without compromising its constitutional position on taxing services.
“I made the case before the EC that J&K’s special taxation powers have to be protected while rolling out GST,” Drabu, J&K Finance Minister.
It remains to be seen how this is taken up in coming weeks.
